🏅 Mini Peso Innovation by SMPN 22 Wins Gold Medal at I2ASPO
Kedungkandang (malangkota.go.id) – Five students from SMP Negeri 22 Malang proudly made their mark by winning a gold medal at the international science competition Indonesia International Applied Science Project Olympiad (I2ASPO).
The talented students are Bre Banyubiru, Dafa Ghaitsa Yogatama, Sasono Faqih, Muhammad Aqila Ishaam, and Novel Nino Herlambang. They are part of the Innovation Cadre Team of SMPN 22 Malang.
Organized by the Indonesian Young Scientist Association, the team presented a project titled "Mini Peso (Mini Organic Trash Processing Tool) from Used Goods", a small-scale organic waste processor creatively built using recycled materials.

The journey to this achievement was far from easy. They had to compete against 410 online teams and 85 offline teams from 17 countries including Bangladesh, India, Vietnam, the USA, South Korea, Thailand, Turkey, Iran, and many more.
“Mini Peso is a compact waste processor built using recycled materials like a washing machine dynamo, used paint drums, gallon bottles, and custom-made blades,” explained Dafa Ghaitsa Yogatama, Friday (February 10, 2023).
The device is designed to be portable and simple to operate, even within the classroom. It is an effective tool for managing waste using appropriate and eco-friendly technology.
“Our goal was to reuse waste materials and create something functional. That’s how Mini Peso came to life — an affordable, minimalist, and efficient waste processor,” Dafa added.
Dwi Utami, S.Pd, the team’s mentor, expressed her gratitude for the students’ success. She shared that the team had been trained to think creatively and find innovative solutions as part of the Innovation Cadre Program at SMPN 22.
“We teach students how to create innovations that offer real-world solutions,” said Dwi.
This initiative is also a part of the school’s Adiwiyata environmental education program. To prepare for I2ASPO, the students trained for three months — from brainstorming ideas, writing proposals, building prototypes, to presenting in English before an international panel of judges.
Dwi hopes that this success will motivate other students to innovate, compete globally, and contribute solutions to everyday environmental challenges.
